More at the Weekly
Managing editor Ellen Griley's last day is tomorrow, and staff writer Dave Wielenga (the guy who put HB mayor Dave Garofalo in jail) just gave his notice. That leaves three reporters, a features writer, the calendar guy, and two editors.
That sounds FUN.
You know, I was planning to stay at the Weekly; I knew exactly how many people were leaving, and I was freaking out trying to figure how I'd singlehandedly put out the paper. I was making plans to save that thing as best I could. And then the New Times suits met with me and . . . it sure didn't seem like they wanted me to stay. Even with four of us gone, they're still hassling the others instead of just making them feel respected and necessary. It just blows my mind.

One of the few major-city alternative papers not under Lacey's thumb has a review of Village Voice Media's decimation of papers like the OC Weekly.
But it does not have your recent, even more depressing news about the OC Weekly.
Good luck with the room, and with finding a suitable, and well-paying with benefits, job where your writing can find a wide audience.
...except Dave Garofalo never went to jail (that would be Pam Houchen) and Anthony Pignataro was just as responsible for exposing Garofalo.
As I see it, you all have two basic choices:
1) Crank up a new alt weekly in OC, as an 'alternative' to the newly revamped OC Weakly (note double pun). The problem here is that running a newsy weekly requires some amount of expertise and even experience. Perhaps Will Swain, Rebecca et al can put an add in Craigs List to find the right personnel that have such experience (note acerbic wit).
2) Go to where theres good work. If OC cant muster a decent alt weekly, what about San Francisco? What about Las Vegas? Of course rebecca probably wants to stay in OC, but that and $1.29 will get her a cup of coffee at 7-11 (note old school American saying appropriately remodelled for 2007).
The bottom line is this: Its going to take Rebecca a little while to absorb the huge, life changing experience, but absorb it and bounce back she will. Oh my gosh, mymyspace has the coolest Randi Rhodes interview! (note plug)
Wow, that sounds sort of depressing, esp. since the Weekly's been around so long.
I guess it's just the typical corporate shens, tho. Just want the name. Hopefully they won't sink it like CompUSA did Good Guys...
And, yes, the word verif is finally showing up. And, even though other people have posted while I was unable to, I'll note it did make Blogger news. So I'm not crazy. Maybe.
